Jeremiah J. O'Connell is an accomplished professional with comprehensive experience in Securities Processing and Information Technology functions. He is the founder and principal of Jeremiah Associates, a management consulting and training services company. Mr. O'Connell has recently co-authored a book on global industry practices, Handbook of Global Securities Operations.
Professional Experience:
- Lead instructor at leading securities industry training institutions. Program topics presented include domestic and global securities processing functions and activities, management reporting and the use of Information Technology to support trading, settlement and transaction processing.
- Implemented a trade clearance and settlement systems for a municipal bond broker. Project required evaluation of off-the-shelf solutions versus construction of a customized system solution. The system increased trading capacity and allowed the firm to self-clear their business saving over a million dollars per year.
- Managed the design and development of Global Trading and Clearance system for a broker/dealer, supporting bonds, equity and derivative securities trading and settlement in 28 countries with multi-currency capabilities.
- Supervised consulting engagement with dual objectives to reduce execution costs and identify alternative clearing service providers; assisted client in negotiating new execution agreement realizing saving of 20% and presented clearing alternatives saving 35% over current costs
- Performed evaluation of various Information Technology solutions to support trading, settlement and related transaction processing activities. These efforts resulted in implementation of "off the shelf" applications and/or internal development effort.
- Established new operations area to provide enhanced support to trading desks. Required realignment of operations functions, elimination of existing areas and introduction of new process flows. Benefits realized were a reduction in internal handoffs, faster problem resolution and increased customer service.
- Reorganized middle and back office staff by functional responsibilities for a major investment bank; staff supported client service, trading, and client support in addition to trade processing settlement, asset servicing for Treasury, Securitized, Corporate and Municipal securities.
- Established Foreign Exchange trading operations department supporting 24-hour global trading; including staffing, systems, defining procedures and reporting requirements.
