- Bookkeeping: Restarting Kinross Gold (KGC) Position- Since I am not sure what exactly the market will "hate" next week or in the weeks to come; it seems to change by the day; I want to build up 'protection' (hedging) another way, and we'll use gold. Gold is more of a sentiment indicator than anything to do with fundamentals. During this market rebound the Gold ETF (GLD) has not really fallen much - that is not a good sign. Remember, gold is the ultimate Armaggedon trade and in the past an inflation hedge (although it appears black gold has taken that mantle since last fall). So with the "all clear" signal once again launched by CNBC ("it's all priced in") it seems curious that gold is not correcting. - Fortuna Silver (FVI.v, FVITF)-
 I just did this chart for my pal Otto and his blog. Thought I'd throw it up here as well. Otto is highly bullish on FVI for fundamental reasons. I however like the chart. I added to my underwater positions this morning and will hold. Company has some silver production in Peru and a silver/gold property in Mexico and unlike many juniors, no immediate need for cash.
- How Have Commodities Compared in 2008?-
We have all heard the headline reports about energy prices skyrocketing in 2008, but what have the other commodities been doing in terms of percentage returns? Let’s take a quick look at Agriculture, Metals, Energy, Livestock, and the CRB Index for their standing now that half of the year has passed.

It’s no surprise that energy prices are up over 50% for the year, and that broader commodities are up as well.
- Gold Breaks Out - Target $1000-
As mentioned previously, Gold prices broke out of a triangle consolidation pattern and now appear headed to their price projection target of $1,000 per ounce. Let’s see how this is possible.
First, gold prices have clearly entered a consolidation pattern, no matter how you draw the trendlines. Price swings are overlapping and truncating at closer prices as the swings narrow. The moving averages became flat and have now turned back to the upside in the ‘most bullish orientation’ possible.
Gold broke above the upper trendline around $900 per ounce, and then confirmed the break with a ‘throwback’ retracement that tested and held the rising 20 period moving average as well as the break-out zone.
- Always a Silver Lining - We no Longer Own FCStone Group (FCSX)- As bad as things are, we could always have it worse. For example, FCStone Group (FCSX) could be our largest holding; or a top 10 holding; or any sort of holding! It's a derivative of the commodity boom. Would seem like a safe bet. Not so much - down 45% this morning off of earnings. Did I mention every day during earnings season is like running through a mine field?

- Has Gold Broken Upside Resistance?-
Last week, gold prices broke a set of resistance trendlines, and could be headed higher. Let’s look at the chart to see the recent developments.

Whether you draw the longer trendline off the closing (or even intraday) highs from mid-March, or of the most recent two swing highs, price indeed broke above both trendlines and above the key 20 and 50 period moving averages, which are currently rising and (technically) in the most bullish orientation possible (20 above the 50 which is above the 200).
Per request, I have added the ‘legend’ or prices section on each chart from StockCharts.com so that you can see exactly where the prices of the key 20, 50, and 200 period moving averages exist at that moment.
- Within five tonnes of a new record at the GLD gold ETF- The SPDR Gold Shares ETF (NYSEArca:GLD) continues to add to its holdings (see the company's website for details). As of Wednesday, the "tonnes in the trust" for the world's most popular gold ETF increased to 659 tonnes, just short of the record set in March.
 GLD_total.png" alt="" border="0" />The trust now has a net asset value of over $21 billion with average trading volume in excess of 10 million shares per day and has attracted an increasing number of investors in recent weeks.
Relative to many other commodities, the gold price has lagged this year. In fact, with an 11 percent year-to-date gain, the yellow metal is 6th from the bottom in gains this year of the 19 commodities in the Reuters/Jeffries CRB Index.

- Gold Price Forecast and Precious Metals Analysis- Precious metals cracked All-Time High territory, so I recorded this video to show you what our research is showing us and what positions we may be taking.
- Platinum Price Skyrockets, But There's No ETF to Choo-Choo-Choose-
 Platinum prices jumped in January because of the power outage in South Africa - too bad there's no exchange traded fund (ETF) for the precious metal available here in the United States.
Prices will continue to rise and the end is not in sight, say analysts. If you have your heart set on a platinum piece this Valentine's Day, or rather your valentine has platinum tastes, be ready to pay the price. Guys planning to pop the question might have a little sticker shock in store for them, says Allen Sykora for Wall Street Journal.
Platinum prices are set for a jump of 24% compared to the end of 2007.
The spot price for platinum closed at $1,911.00 on Tuesday. The prices on platinum will continue to be supported because of the power disruptions and the lower production expected for this year.

- Prime interest rates and the market value of Gold- Before the Feds Emergency rate cut on Friday the bias was to higher rates across the board. For example the Australian Reserve Bank increased prime interest rates by 0.25% and even now after the stock market pummeling, continues to warn of more to come. This article explains why interest rates are about to go higher at exactly the WORST possible time.
The question foremost on investors minds is whether a turbulent stock market warrants halting interest rate increases or, in the case of the US, decreasing rates to resuscitate the Real Estate and credit markets.
- Gold Stock Market Quote says BUY- The sell-off in August is but a distant memory. Gold stocks reversed sharply higher in September culminating in a 6.6% 1-day gain. Is there anyway to cope with this volatility?
The vicious sell off in August is but a distant memory. Weak hands panicked and sold out as the HUI capitulated to long-term support at 280. It was ugly but it did the job.
Then, unencumbered by speculators looking to make a quick killing, the HUI reversed sharply higher in September culminating (so far) in a 1-day gain of 6.6%.
- Yamana Gold - update on merger outcome- Yamana Gold Update ( YRI on Toronto , AUY on NYSE)
Yesterday I wrote that I had added Yamana to the Apprentice Millionaire Portfolio . I had set aside money for the purchase - stocks designates as in the AMP Portfolio are actually owned . However, Yamana went down 45 cents yesterday and declined as well today ( Tuesday when the blog is written ) .
